Words of comfort

Nothing prepares you for the loss of someone close to you. Grieving is a natural process which is handled by people in many different ways.

We have a simple child's story, called ‘Water Bugs & Dragonflies’ that can help to explain death to smaller children - copies are freely available at our office, and can also be viewed on this web site by 'clicking here'.

Death is nothing at all.
I have only slipped away into the next room.
I am /, and you are you.
Whatever we were to each other, that we still are.
Call me by my old familiar name.
Speak to me in the easy way you always used.
Put no difference into your tone.
Wear no forced air of solemnity or sorrow.
Laugh as we always laughed at the little jokes we enjoyed together.
Play, smile, think of me, pray for me.
Let my name be ever the household word it always was.
Let it be spoken without effect, without trace of a shadow on it.
Life means all that it ever meant.
It is the same as it ever was.
There is absolutely unbroken continuity.
Why should I be out of mind because I am out of sight?
I am but waiting for you for an interval.
Somewhere very near, just around the corner.
...All is well.

Canon Henry Scott Holland

Let us thank God for the years they were with us.
For the gaiety and happiness and the companionship and love they gave us.

These are things that nothing can take away, they are ours to hold
in our hearts and cherish all the days of our life.

Let us dwell on these things and not
on the sadness of a temporary farewell.

Selwyn Cumnor

Do not stand at my grave and weep
I am not there, I do not sleep.

I am a thousand winds that blow
I am the diamond glints on snow.

I am the sunlight on ripened grain
I am the gentle autumn rain.

When you awoken in the morning's hush,
I am the swift uplifting rush

Of quiet birds in circled flight,
I am the soft stars that shine at night.

Do not stand at my grave and cry,
I am not there: I did not die.
